Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Weekend Itinerary in Munising, Michigan
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is one of the most breathtaking places in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Towering sandstone cliffs, turquoise Lake Superior waters, waterfalls, forest trails, and small-town charm make it the perfect weekend getaway for nature lovers and hikers. Here’s exactly how we spent our weekend in Munising and honestly, it was one of the most beautiful trips we’ve taken.
Day 1 in Munising: Pictured Rocks Dunes, Waterfalls & Lake Superior Views
We arrived in Munising around late morning and started our trip with a relaxed exploration day to ease into the landscapes of Pictured Rocks.
Superior Overlook Beach
Our first stop was Superior Overlook Beach, a peaceful stretch along Lake Superior with calm waves and wide-open views. Standing here, you immediately understand the scale and power of the lake. It feels more like an ocean than a lake.
Grand Sable Dunes Trail
From there, we headed to the Grand Sable Dunes Trail, a short 0.6-mile roundtrip hike that leads to sweeping views of towering sand dunes dropping dramatically into Lake Superior. The contrast of golden sand, deep blue water and endless sky was stunning.
Sable Falls
Next, we stopped at Sable Falls, a quick 0.4-mile roundtrip trail that takes you to a beautiful cascading waterfall flowing directly toward the lake. It’s an easy walk but feels incredibly rewarding.
Log Slide Overlook
We then visited Log Slide Overlook, a short 0.25-mile walk with one of the most dramatic viewpoints in the area. The overlook gives you a bird’s-eye view of Lake Superior and the steep dunes below. Historically, logs were slid down these slopes into the lake but today, it’s all about the views.
Optional Visit to Grand Marais
If time allows, we highly recommend driving a little farther to Grand Marais, a charming small town with a quiet harbor, local shops, and a laid-back Upper Peninsula vibe. It’s a lovely place to slow down and soak in the surroundings.
We wrapped up Day 1 feeling excited and well-prepared for the big hiking day ahead.
Day 2: Chapel Loop Hike and Munising Highlights
Day 2 was the highlight of the trip and the reason Pictured Rocks is so unforgettable.
We left as early as possible to secure parking at the Chapel Basin / Chapel Falls Trailhead, which is absolutely essential. The parking lot fills up extremely fast, especially on summer weekends.
Chapel Loop Hike (10 Miles | 4–5 Hours)
The Chapel Loop is about 10 miles and combines waterfalls, beaches, cliffs, and forest trails. It’s easily one of the best hikes in the Midwest.
Chapel Falls
About 1.5 miles from the trailhead, this powerful waterfall is surrounded by forest and makes a great first stop.
Chapel Rock & Chapel Beach
Another 1.5 miles farther brings you to the iconic rock formation with a lone tree growing from the top. The beach nearby is a perfect place to rest and take in Lake Superior.
Lake Superior Clifftop Trail to Mosquito Beach
This stretch, roughly 4 miles along the North Country Trail, was hands down the best part of the hike. The trail runs high above Lake Superior, offering nonstop views of the colorful Pictured Rocks cliffs, turquoise water, and dramatic formations like Grand Portal Point. The water below shifted between turquoise and deep blue, and every viewpoint felt postcard-worthy.
Mosquito Beach, Mosquito Falls & Mosquito River
The return portion takes you inland through forested trails, past Mosquito Falls, and along the river, completing the loop.
For this hike, be sure to carry plenty of water, snacks, sun protection, and layers. The entire hike was challenging but incredibly rewarding. The views along the clifftop trail were unreal. Every turn felt like a postcard. This loop alone makes the trip worth it.
Alternative Ways to Explore Pictured Rocks
If a 10-mile hike isn’t for you, there are great alternatives. You can explore Pictured Rocks by guided kayak tours along the cliffs and caves, or take a Pictured Rocks boat cruise from Munising for a relaxed way to see landmarks like Miners Castle and Grand Portal Point. Shorter hikes to Chapel Falls or Chapel Rock are also excellent options.
Downtown Munising: Food, Drinks & Festivities
After finishing the hike, we headed to downtown Munising to refuel, explore, and grab souvenirs.
Where we ate & relaxed:
- Gallery Coffee Company – Handcrafted lattes and fresh pastries, perfect after a long hike
- Driftwood Deli – One of the best veggie paninis we’ve had, fresh and filling
- Pictured Rocks Pizza – Wood-fired pizza and local brews
- Earl E. Byrds – A solid diner option for breakfast or comfort food
Since we were visiting around July 4th, the town was full of energy. The afternoon brought a local parade, followed by water fights, live music, and a festive atmosphere throughout Munising.
In the evening, we stopped by By George Brewing Company, a great local brewery to unwind and soak in the small-town vibes.
We ended the day with a short drive to Sand Point Beach for sunset over Lake Superior. Watching the sun dip into the horizon as waves gently rolled in was the perfect way to close out an unforgettable day.Later that night, we watched fireworks over Munising Bay, lighting up the sky above the water. A magical ending to a perfect weekend.
